I've Been Blessed With A New Job

I just found out yesterday that I have been hired as a teacher's assistant for a preschool. This is a long time prayer that has been answered and I'm so excited to be starting on September 2. This new job is going to enable me to help cover our monthly expenses and help us to build up our emergency savings account. I think a balance of $1000 would be a sufficient balance to strive for. I feel it's the best thing for our family to have this cushion so that we can get out of the strangling debt we're in. It's important to build this savings account so that we can have a safety net that we can draw from if an emergency should come up like a car breakdown or appliance malfunction to name a few of the things that can happen in any given month. It will be such a relief not to have to use our credit card which will drag us deeper in the hole of consumer debt. This is going to be my goal to build this security savings account and then I will concentrate on the credit card with the highest debt.

My total receipt came to $7.47. I used the $5 CVS Coupon to bring the balance down. My out of pocket total was $5.47 because I received $2 in extra bucks for purchasing the Neutrogena Makeup. If I didn't have any coupons and there were no sales going on I would have paid $43.63. I saved 87%. And to make this deal even sweeter the cashier gave me a giant Hershey's bar as an incentive to complete a survey.

Walgreens has the single bottles of Starbucks Frappucinos for $1.25 each after in-ad coupon. If you didn't get a Sunday paper you can pick up a flier at the front entrance. Use this $1/1 printable coupon (IE Link) (Fox Fire Link) to get them for only $0.25 each! You can print the coupons twice if you press the back button. There was also a $1/1 Starbucks coupon in the Sunday paper on 6/21 Smart Source.

Pick them up on 7/31 and get an additonal 15% off, or pay just six cents. Possibly even less if the 15% off is deducted off the regular price not the after in-ad coupon. Don’t forget to hand the manufacturer coupon first and then the in-ad coupon.

CVS For Newbies

Are you new to the CVS game? Do you want to find out more on how you can get the deals and save money at CVS. Well you have come to the right place.

Thanks to Rene at Budget Saving Mom for this guest post, here are the basics to getting started saving money for your family at CVS.

Getting Started
First, get a CVS card. You can get one in the store immediately or you can apply for a card online.

Always give the cashier your CVS card before beginning your transaction. You must have your card with you to use your extra care bucks and get the deals that are available.

Most weeks CVS has deals that are totally free after extra care bucks. The way this works is that you purchase the item and pay out of pocket the first week. After this transaction is completed, extra care bucks (ECBs) print out at the bottom of your receipt. These ECBs are like cash and can be used on your next purchase at CVS. (These coupons can not be used to purchase stamps or gift cards as explained in the fine print.)

Each week check the ads or my blog to find the deals that are free after ECBS. Purchase these items out of pocket the first week. For the second week, purchase the items that are free after ECBS, but use your ECBs from the previous week to pay. This way you can keep rolling over your extra care bucks from week to week without paying.

Making Money From ECBs
Sometimes, the items that you purchase cost less than the extra care bucks that you receive back so you pay less than the ECB that you receive. Also, if you can pair up a coupon with an item that is free you can increase your savings.

Example
Purchase some soap for $4. Receive $4 ECB, Use a $1 coupon. This item would be free with ECB plus you only paid $3 out of pocket or using ECBs but got $4 ECB back. Using this method your ECB accumulate to more than what you originally paid out of pocket. This is called a money maker. These are money makers in that you receive more ECBs than what you paid out of pocket using cash or ECBs.

Monthly and Weekly Deals
Weekly deals are shown in the Sunday papers. Monthly deals are found in the ECB book at the front of the store. These deals often have a limit to the number of times you can purchase these items and receive ECBs.

Stacking Coupons
After a few weeks of making purchases at CVS store coupons will be printed out at the bottom of your receipt. You will be able to use these store coupons and your manufacturers coupons. Try to save these coupons until the items are on sale and use both coupons, store and manufacturer coupons for the item. For instance, I have a $2 off Pull Up store coupon and a $2 manufacturer Pull Ups coupon. This will give me a total of $4 off of Pull Ups. If I am able to stack this with a sale, I can get them even cheaper.

Sometimes, you will also find $3/$15 (3 dollars off 15 dollar purchase coupons) or $4/$20 coupons that you can stack with your store and manufacturer coupons.

Order to Use Your Coupons
1. Use any $3/$15 or $4/$20 coupons first
2. store coupons
3. manufacturer coupons
4. ECBs

You do not get a refund for your ECBs, so make sure you use the total amount. For instance, if you have a $7 ECB coupon, make sure you spend at least $7. If your total is $6 and you use a $7 ECB, you have lost a dollar.

Care of Bee Stings Survival Tip

Over the weekend my husband was working out in the yard and came in the house with a very painful bee sting. He was swelling up in the area of the sting and was in pain. I really didn't know what to do. I put some benadryl on the sting and gave him some Aleve for the pain. It took a while before he felt better. I wish I would have known about the baking soda paste. It probably would have relieved him of his pain and swelling quicker.

Hey we all know that fast food is bad for us. It's high in fat and over time will clog our arteries. It causes us to gain weight. Food food is not nutritious to our bodies. Yet we still eat it out of convenience for the most part, it tastes good and it's reasonable priced.

After seeing this blog post from Monica Higgins, I will definitely think twice about eating fast food in the future. I will never look at fast food the same again.

Using Grape Tomatoes From My Garden

Today for lunch I wanted to use the grape tomatoes that I picked from my garden so I decided to make some tostadas for lunch. This is the way my mother, who was born in Mexico, makes tostadas. I grew up eating these and they are yummy! Eating them brings back a lot of memories. Here's the recipe.

Tostadas

Tomatoes either a can or vine ripe tomatoes
Onions
Oregano
Salt and Pepper
Corn tortillas
Refried Beans
Parmesan Cheese
Shredded Lettuce

Mix up the tomatoes, onions, salt and pepper, and oregano according to your taste and put aside.

Heat up a pan of oil and then fry the corn tortillas until slightly brown. Salt them.

Spread the heated refried beans on the tostada. Add the shredded lettuce, tomato mixture and then top it with parmesan cheese.

Enjoy.

Fiesta Omelet

This morning I used the fresh produce from my garden to make this omelet. I love being able to go to my garden and pick out what I need when I'm getting ready to prepare something in the kitchen. I don't know why I waited so long to have a garden. I'm 45 years old and I missed so much by waiting. I missed the savings, convenience, home grown taste and the sense of pride that comes from having a garden. I'm looking forward to many more years of working on and enjoying my garden. If you haven't started your garden yet it's not to late. It's better late then never they say and take it from me it's worth the time and effort.

Fiesta Omelet

Salt and Pepper
Basil

I used a couple of eggs and used the ingredients listed and whipped them together. Put them in a heated pan with a little bit of butter to prevent sticking and for a little extra taste. Flipped it over when lightly browned then put some cheese and waited until this side became lightly browned then folded in half and put some cheese on top with some jalapeno peppers to give it a little kick.

It was delicious.

I'm Back and Look What I Found In My Garden!

I'm back from our short trip to New London, CT. My older son was attending the AIM program at the Coast Guard Academy for the week and we went to pick him up there.

I was pleasantly surprised when we returned home to find I had some ripe grape tomatoes and a huge cucumber along with some green onions. I used some of the green onions today in the pork fried rice I prepared for my family for dinner. There is nothing like being able to walk into your garden and pick fresh produce to enhance your meal.

Tomorrow I'm going to make a tasty salad and can't wait to sink my teeth into the vegetables that came out of my garden.

I have to say that this is my first experience in having a garden and I feel like I accomplished all I hoped for. I was not very confident in the spring when I was planning my garden because I didn't know what to expect. I thought for sure my garden would be a flop because I've had bad luck in the past. But now that I've built some confidence I know for sure I will be planning another garden next year! It sure is worth the work.

Taking A Break

I was going through my Kraft Food & Family magazine from the summer of 2005 and found this refreshing Berry Lemonade Slush I'm enjoying while surfing my favorite blogs. Here's how you can make one to enjoy.

Berry Lemonade Slush

1/2 cup Country Time Lemonade Flavor Drink Mix (dry)
1/2 cup water
3 cups ice cubes
1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries

Empty the 1/2 cup of drink mix into the blender. Add remaining ingredients; cover. Blend on high speed 10 seconds. Turn off blender. Stir with spoon; cover. Blend an additional 5 seconds or until smooth, using pulsing action.

Serve immediately. Store leftover slush in freezer.

At the bottom on my receipt there is a breakdown for rewards points that I earned when I shopped at Kroger. Currently the cycle period for this promotion is from April 1 - June 30. During this time frame I've earned 589 which includes the 40 points I just earned with this shopping trip. For the first 500 points I will earn $5 and then another $1 for each additional 100 points I collect. Once this cycle ends on June 30th my points will be calculated and I'll receive a check in the mail.

This is another way to save money and every little dollar counts.

Shepherd's Pie by Rachael Ray

2 lbs potatoes, such as russet, peeled and cubed
2 tbls sour cream or softened cream cheese
1 large egg yolk
1/2 cup cream, for a lighter version substitute vegetable or chicken broth
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tbls extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
1 3/4 pounds ground beef or ground lamb
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
1 onion, chopped
2 tbls butter
2 tbls all-purpose flour
1 cup beef stock or broth
2 tsp Worcestershire, eyeball it
1/2 cup frozen peas, a couple of handfuls
1 tsp sweet paprika
2 tbls chopped fresh parsley leaves

Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 12 minutes. Drain potatoes and pour them into a bowl. Combine sour cream, egg yolk and cream. Add the cream mixture into potatoes and mash until potatoes are almost smooth.

While potatoes boil, preheat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil to hot pan with beef or lamb. Season meat with salt and pepper. Brown and crumble meat for 3 or 4 minutes. If you are using lamb and the pan is fatty, spoon away some of the drippings. Add chopped carrot and onion to the meat. Cook veggies with meat 5 minutes stirring frequently. In a second small skillet over medium heat cook butter and flour together 2 minutes. Whisk in broth and Worcestershire sauce. Thicken gravy 1 minute. Add gravy to meat and vegetables. Stir in peas.

Preheat broiler to high. Fill a small rectangular casserole with meat and vegetable mixture. Spoon potatoes over meat evenly. Top potatoes with paprika and broil 6 to 8 inches from the heat until potatoes are evenly browned. Top casserole dish with chopped parsley and serve.

First Taste of My Garden

Today I'm enjoying the first taste of my garden. It's so nice to be able to go to my garden and pick some fresh herbs for the dinner I'm going to prepare. It's fresh, nothing tastes better and I'm saving money too. I'm planning on preparing Shepherd's Pie courtesy of Rachael Ray.

Garden Update

I'm so excited that my garden is looking healthy. I didn't have much confidence when I first started this garden because it's my first try at gardening. I wasn't sure that my plants would grow because I tend to over water or sometimes underwater my plants. I've had many failures in the past. These tomatoes were grown from seed and when I transplanted them they looked shocked with delicate stems and very pale light green leaves. It's amazing how healthy they look now. They are a dark vibrant green and their stems are getting thick. This weekend we went to Home Depot and purchased the steel cages to support the plants because they were leaning over.

If you never started a garden because you don't know where to start. I want to urge you on. Start with a small garden or even several pots with herbs and tomatoes and build your confidence. If I can do it you can too. It really is a wonderful experience to see your garden grow and feel apart of nature.
